Providence Hospital School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The 16-month program includes classroom and clinical instruction in abdominal, OB-GYN, ultrasound physics, superficial anatomy, vascular physics and vascular ultrasound.   Students attend 40 hours weekly (Monday thru Friday) - 12-14 hours of classes are held weekly with the remainder of time in the Ultrasound department focusing on applying theory.  Program has clinical affiliations with St. John Hospital and St. John-Macomb with all students rotating to clinical sites during the program.

To maintain competency, students must have an academic standard of 85 percent or above for all classes and clinical evaluations throughout the program.  Graduates are eligible to complete the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registry examination(s).

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography program administrators, educators, and clinical instructors are dedicated to provide quality didactic and clinical instruction under our accreditation standards and guidelines. To achieve these ends, we commit ourselves to support each student in their pursuit to meet the didactic and clinical competencies according to the goals and objectives of the sonography program.

Accreditation
Fully accredited in general and vascular ultrasound by CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and JRC-DMS (Joint Review committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.  Providence ultrasound department is accredited for general and vascular ultrasound by the ACR (American College of Radiology). The Providence Maternal Fetal Diagnostic Department is accredited by the AIUM (American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine) for obstetrical ultrasound exams. 

Profession Description – What is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?
A sonographer is a highly skilled Allied Health profession who performs diagnostic medical sonographic procedures utilizing high frequency sound waves. A sonographer is required to operate a variety of complex ultrasound equipment as well as numerous ancillary devices in order to perform a sonographic procedure. The profession of sonographer includes study of the human body in exam of the abdomen, obstetrical and gynecological, adult and pediatric cardiac, vascular technology neurosonography and ophthalmology. Sonographers are qualified by technological education to provide services to the patient using sound waves under the supervision of a medical physician or doctor of osteopathy. Such sonographic services may be provided by an institution such as a hospital or clinical setting whereby the physician is responsible for the interpretation of the sonographic images. Sonographers work as a team with the physician in collecting data for the purpose of diagnosing disease processes.

16 months

Program Capacity
Four to five students are selected each year.

Program hours
40 hours weekly (day shift) Monday thru Friday.

Tuition
Tuition is $2,500 for the 2006-2008 program (textbooks not included).   Full tuition forgiveness program is in place for accepted candidates who will work for the PHMC/St John Medical System for one year following graduation and successfully complete PEAT (Pre-Employment Assessment Tool) see program coordinator for complete details.

Program Concentration (didactic and clinical instruction)
ABD, OB-GYN, Vascular, Superficial parts, and Physics Applied to Sonography. Students must maintain an 85% or above academic standard for all didactic and clinical evaluations throughout the program to demonstrate competency. 

Admission requirements
Must have completed pre-requisite post secondary courses and be a registered radiologic technologist, registered nurse, registered respiratory therapist, or student graduating from an accredited RT, RN or Respiratory Therapy program OR have a Bachelor Degree (BS preferred) or equivalency of, with clinical medical experience (please call program coordinator for complete details of required coursework).  GPA must be 2.5 or higher.  Must be 18 years or older.

Upon graduation
Receipt of a Certificate of Graduation and school pin.  Graduates are then eligible to complete the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registry examination(s).
