Cryoablation

What is Cryoablation? How can it help?

Cryoablation is a technology that is used to treat benign tumors of the breast. The process works by engulfing benign tumors in an ice ball.  The procedure is FDA approved and is now available at St. John Health by Dr. Linda Dubay, a surgeon who specializes in breast care. She is working collaboratively with radiologists, Dr. James Selis and Dr. Thomas Hall.

Facts:
  • Fibroadenomas are found in 10% of all women and are most common in women in their teens, twenties, and thirties.
  • About 15% of women will have more than one fibroadenoma in their lifetime.
  • Fibroadenomas can grow large and painful and because of this many women opt to undergo surgery to remove these.

There is now another option for these benign lumps. Cryoablation uses a probe to freeze these tumors causing cell damage and break down, thereby destroying the fibroadenoma and preventing growth. Over time the tumor will reduce in size and the body absorbs and replaces the ablated tissue.

Benefits:

There are several benefits to this procedure.

  • It is highly effective and extremely safe.
  • It has excellent cosmetic outcomes and minimal discomfort.
  • No anesthesia or hopsital stay is required and it can be done in the doctor's office in less than 30 minutes.
