Career Profiles: Medical Laboratory Technologists/Technicians
What do they do?
- Work
in hospitals, medical groups, research
labs, pharmaceutical companies and universities.
- Microscopically
examine and analyze body fluids, tissues
and cells.
- Look
for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms.
- Perform
complex chemical, biological, hematological,
immunologic, microscopic and bacteriological
tests.
- Determine
blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
- Match
blood for transfusions.
- Test
for drug levels in the blood to monitor
treatment.
- Prepare
specimens for examination, count cells,
look for abnormalities.

Education/Training
|
- Challenging
math, science and English courses in
high school.
- Bachelor’s
degree in medical technology or one
of the life sciences, or
- Combination
of education, on-the-job and specialized
training.
- Additional
graduate education or specialized training
to advance career in clinical chemistry,
blood banking and microbiology.

Medical laboratory technicians
work under the direction of laboratory
technologists, perform less complex
tests, and usually have an associate’s
degree and specialized training or a
certificate from a hospital, vocational
or technical school.
- Some
states require laboratory personnel
to be licensed or registered.
