Career Profiles: Medical Laboratory Technologists/Technicians

What do they do?

  • Work in hospitals, medical groups, research labs, pharmaceutical companies and universities.
  • Microscopically examine and analyze body fluids, tissues and cells.
  • Look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms.
  • Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic and bacteriological tests.
  • Determine blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
  • Match blood for transfusions.
  • Test for drug levels in the blood to monitor treatment.
  • Prepare specimens for examination, count cells, look for abnormalities.

Education/Training

  • Challenging math, science and English courses in high school.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or one of the life sciences, or
  • Combination of education, on-the-job and specialized training.
  • Additional graduate education or specialized training to advance career in clinical chemistry, blood banking and microbiology.
  • Medical laboratory technicians work under the direction of laboratory technologists, perform less complex tests, and usually have an associate’s degree and specialized training or a certificate from a hospital, vocational or technical school.
  • Some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered.

Salary

  • Technologist:  Salaries range from $29,240 and $55,560
  • Technician:  Salaries range from $18,550 and $42,370
