Career Profiles: Medical Librarian

What do they do?

  • Work in hospitals, medical schools, universities and professional schools, consumer health libraries, research centers, government agencies.
  • Provide health information about new medical treatments, clinical trials and standard trials procedures, tests and equipment to health professionals, patients, consumers and corporations.
  • Select and acquire books, journals and other library resources.
  • Establish electronic and digital database information systems.
  • Organize information into collections and develop catalogs for access and provide reference assistance.
  • Coordinate and control budgets and supervise library technicians.

Education/Training

  • High school courses in information management, science, math and English.
  • Undergraduate degree in one of the life sciences is helpful.
  • Master’s degree in library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Graduate courses in medical informatics or medical librarianship are helpful.

Salary

  • Varies with type and location of institution, level of  responsibility, length of employment.

  • Medical Library Association reports the average starting salary in 1998 was $31,066; average overall was $45,016.  Library directors can earn $47,000 and more.
