Career Profiles: Oncology Nurse
What do they do?
- Work
primarily in hospitals to provide and
supervise care for cancer patients who
are chronically or critically ill.
- Coordinates
care with other cancer care providers
and team members.
- Provides
expertise about oncology to colleagues,
allied health professionals and health
care consumers.
- Evaluates
and applies research findings that affect
cancer care or nursing.
- Also
work in home health, managed care organizations,
nursing schools, outpatient surgery
centers, clinics.

Education/Training
|
- Must
be a registered nurse with a cancer-specific
knowledge and clinical expertise in
cancer care beyond that required in
a basic nursing program.
- Advanced
oncology nursing practice requires a
minimum of a masters degree.
- May
become certified as an oncology certified
nurse (OCN), advanced oncology certified
nurse (AOCN) or certified pediatric
oncology nurse (CPON).
