Career Profiles: Paramedic

What do they do?

Paramedics work under the direction of a physician, often through radio communication in order to provide advanced life support to acutely injured patients in pre-hospital/hospital care settings.  Paramedics must be able to recognize, assess and manage medical emergencies under medical direction.

Where do they work?

Ambulance/Emergency Rooms.

Educational Requirements

The average program requires anywhere from 600-1000 hours of instruction.  These hours are divided into classroom and clinical hours.  Most of these programs are offered at community colleges.  State licensure is also required.
