Champions for Life Climb to Beat Breast Cancer
Cancer impacts all of us in some way or another. According to the American Cancer Society, one in four deaths in the United States is due to cancer.
In anticipation of their June 26, 2010 Mount Washington climb, an inspiring team of individuals are fundraising for breast care services at the Liggett Breast Center in the Van Elslander Cancer Center (VECC) at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Together, the team will demonstrate that— like working to prevent this disease—anything is possible if taken one step at a time.
Join members of this team at the Champions for Life Climb to Beat Breast Cancer Kick-off Event on Friday, February 26.
As Goodwill Ambassadors for the VECC, the Champions for Life group is dedicated to increasing awareness and visibility through special fundraising events and each member’s daily activities. Through these efforts, the ultimate goal of elevating the quality of care at the cancer center will be achieved. Challenge yourself physically and mentally and be part of a team working to make a real difference!
Proceeds will benefit the Liggett Breast Center at the Van Elslander Cancer Center
The Van Elslander Cancer Center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center is a member of St. John Health - a growing network of community-based hospitals and health care services in southeast Michigan and one of the largest employers in metro Detroit. Birthing Classes
Classes are offered at various St. John locations for expectant parents. Includes stages of labor, what to expect at the hospital, postpartum care, and tour if class is offered at hospital location.
St. John Macomb Hospital offers a variety of classes for expectant parents. Topics include Birth Preparation, Birth Refresher, Cesarean Birth, Breastfeeding, etc. Tours are also available of The Family Birthplace at Macomb. To register, call St. John Physician Finder, 1-866-501-DOCS.
Breast Cancer Support Group
This group is for any woman currently diagnosed with breast cancer. Focus is on issues related to treatment and recovery, both physical and emotional. Sponsored by Candlelighters Foundation.

Breast Feeding Preparation
Learn the skills of breastfeeding and pumping to help the mom and new baby have a successful experience. Support persons are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please bring a doll or stuffed animal to practice positioning.
One-session class taught by a certified lactation consultant, you will find the answers to most common questions about breastfeeding; including: how your body makes milk, getting the baby latched on, and going back to work.

Breastfeeding Assistance Program
Appointments available with lactation consultants to help nursing mothers with concerns and questions about breast-feeding their newborn after they leave the hospital. Breast pump rentals, supplies, prenatal consults and support are also available. Bra-fitting services and maternity/nursing bras are available. Free telephone consultations provided.
