Thank you for your interest in the St. John Hospital and Medical Center Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year One Residency Program. We will begin recruiting in the Fall of 2009 for two openings in the 2010-2011 residency year.
St. John Health’s Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Residency is an organized, directed, post-graduate program developing adept pharmacists with advanced knowledge in the application of pharmaceutical care and the skills to be leaders in improving patient safety.

Statement of Purpose
St. John Hospital and Medical Center Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Purpose Statement
Upon completion of the program, residents will be competent and confident practitioners of direct patient care to multiple patient populations. They will be accountable for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes as members of the health care team. These pharmacists will exercise skill in educating health care professionals, patients, and the community on drug-related topics. They will demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession, and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system. Lastly, they will be well-rounded practitioners that will possess the knowledge and leadership skills to promote the advancement of the practice of pharmacy.
Intended Outcomes of the Residency Training
The Intended Outcome of the St. John Hospital and Medical Center Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Training is a well-rounded individual who will:
1. Provide direct patient care to multiple populations
2. Foster the appropriate and effective use of medications
3. Function effectively as a member of a health care team
4. Educate patients, caregivers, and health care professionals
5. Exercise leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system
6. Manage own practice
Annual salary ~$45,000

Staffing & Service Commitment
Residents will practice as Patient Care Pharmacists every other weekend for about six months, then as skill level permits, will be transferred to an every third weekend staffing schedule. Residents will also serve as Patient Care Pharmacists on two holidays to strengthen their skills in distributive and clinical services including: Order Entry, Pharmacokinetic Dosing, Pain Management, and Anticoagulation Services.
