St. John Hospital Graduate Medical Education

Doctors in classroomSt. John Hospital is an 804-bed Level I trauma center hospital (affiliated with Wayne State University) and located in Detroit, Michigan. St. John Hospital has a 900-member medical staff and 50 medical and surgical specialties. St John offers residency and fellowship training in more than 13 programs. Cardiology Fellowship
St. John Hospital and Medical Center sponsors two programs in Cardiology: a three-year fellowship in General Cardiology, which accepts three fellows per year for a total of twelve, and a one-year subsequent fellowship in Interventional Cardiology for an additional three or four fellows per year.

Emergency Medicine Residency
St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) is an 804-bed tertiary care designated trauma facility located on Detroit's eastside. Because of its location, SJH&MC Emergency Department (ED) serves patients from the inner city as well as the adjacent suburban areas, providing for a diverse Emergency Department experience.

Family Medicine Residency
The SJH&MC Family Medicine Residency trains its residents to be specialists in breadth, allowing them to treat the whole patient and the whole family.

Infectious Diseases Fellowship
St. John Hospital and Medical Center offers a two-year training program in Infectious Diseases with an optional third year for additional research experience.

Internal Medicine Residency
The objectives of the St. John Internal Medicine Residency Program are to provide high quality education, supervision and an academic atmosphere that prepares the resident physician to practice comprehensive, scientific and cost-effective primary care Internal Medicine.

Nephrology Fellowship
St. John Hospital and Medical Center offers a fully accredited two-year fellowship in the subspecialty of Nephrology.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
The four-year residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is fully approved for 16 residents.

Pathology Residency
The Pathology Residency Program is four years long. The residency program is divided into 24 months of Anatomic Pathology Training and 19 months of Clinical Pathology Training, with five months of elective time.

Pediatrics Residency
The goal of the physicians involved in the pediatric training program is to prepare intelligent and dedicated physicians to become outstanding pediatricians.

Podiatric Surgery Residency
Residents in the Podiatric Surgery Residency Program learn cutting edge examination, diagnosis, and treatment for pain and disorders of the foot, and ankle.

Preliminary Surgery
Designated preliminary residents are those accepted for 1, 2 or 3 years prior to continuing their education in another surgical or non-surgical speciality.

Surgery Residency
St. John Hospital and Medical Center offers a five-year residency training program in General Surgery. The program is oriented to meet the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery.

Transitional Year Program
The Transitional Year is designed to provide well-balanced graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines. Because of the number of electives allowed, it offers a flexibility to the applicant not found in other one-year programs.
