An innovative talking scale is helping health care providers better monitor congestive heart failure (CHF) patients, resulting in improved management of the disease and significantly reduced hospitalizations.
St. John Home Care, one of the largest home care agencies in Michigan, is offering patients with congestive heart failure a talking computerized scale that asks patients key questions regarding symptoms and provides more accurate weight readings. Patients weigh themselves daily and answer a series of questions with the computerized scale. The data is then transferred through the patient’s telephone line to the program coordinator, who tracks and analyzes the data. If necessary, the coordinator can contact the patient’s doctor if he/she is showing increased symptoms. Many times an adjustment in the patient’s medication is all that is needed to prevent re-hospitalization.
The talking scale used at St. John Home Care is the Cardiocom® System and offers several advantages over other systems including the ability to:
- monitor patients seven days a week
- weigh patients up to 500 pounds in tenth of a pound increments.
