Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is especially deadly because it can easily spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones, brain, or liver. In 2004, it is estimated that there were approximately 174,000 new cases of lung and bronchus cancer and 160,500 deaths from it.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
Smoking is the number one cause of primary lung cancer, according to the American Lung Association. Eighty-seven percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are proven carcinogens. Cigars and pipes also boost the risk for lung cancer.
