Ambulatory monitoring, or Holter monitoring, enables your doctor to find out how well your heart is keeping its rhythm working as you go about your day-to-day activities. It can also be used to determine how effective a therapy is, if there is anything wrong with the rhythm of your heartbeat or if your heart is getting enough oxygen.
The Holter monitor makes a portable recording of your heart rhythm taken over 24 hours, during periods of rest and regular activity. It monitors your heart’s electrical activity through electrodes which are placed on your chest. The electrical impulses are painless and are transmitted to an amplifier. The amplifier saves a record of the ECG on a small magnetic tape recorder for subsequent review and analysis by your doctor.
