Breast Surgery

Dr. Cheryl Wesen, FACS

Dr. Cheryl Wesen,  director of the St. John Health System Breast Care ProgramDr. Wesen  is the director of the St. John Health System Breast Care Program. She has been a general surgeon since 1985 and is board certified through the American Board of Surgery. She started her education at Cornell University where she received a bachelor's degree in Nutrition with honors. Before going to medical school, she received a masters in Nutrition from the University of Maryland. She then began her medical training at Temple University School of Medicine. There she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. She completed her surgical residency at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio Texas. Following her residency she did a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. 

Dr. Wesen has been with St. John Health since 1995 where she has practiced as a general surgeon with a special interest in breast cancer. Most recently, in 2006, she was asked to lead the St. John Health Breast Care Program. Dr. Wesen oversees the breast programs at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.

As a breast surgeon Dr. Wesen is proficient to offer the latest in surgical techniques such as office-based core biopsies, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and skin sparing mastectomy. She has an excellent collaborative relationship with several plastic surgeons and is often able to offer immediate reconstruction with surgery.

Dr. Wesen's reputation for compassionate care is well known in the community. Her passion for breast health and excellent patient care has earned her Hour Detroit Magazine's "Best Doctors" award for several years. She was named Surgical Instructor of the Year in 1999. She is active in resident education for general surgery as well as ob/gyn residents. Dr. Wesen has published several articles and written several book chapters and continues to give numerous oral presentations. She is active in the American College of Surgeons and local medical organizations.

Dr. Wesen is a native of Texas but has resided in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI for the past 11 years with her husband and three sons. Outside the office she enjoys watching her sons sporting events. Her husband is an anesthesiologist at several local hospitals. 

Dr. Wesen's goal is to treat each patient as though they were her own sister; to provide the best possible medical care to every individual. 
 

Dr. Dharti Sheth, FACS

Dr. Dharti Sheth is the director of the St. John Health System High Risk Breast Clinic.Dr. Sheth has been a general surgeon since 1999. She is board certified through the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She started her medical education at Wayne State University where she received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences. She continued at Wayne State University School of Medicine throughout medical school and graduated from medical school with high distinction. She completed her residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Sheth has been practicing at St. John Hospital and Medical Center since 1999. She is well trained in all aspects of general surgery, including areas of gastrointestinal, endocrine, oncologic, and laparascopic surgery. Her primary area of interest is in breast disease. Dr. Sheth is affiliated with national organizations dealing primarily with breast issues. Her national involvement allow her to provide the latest surgical techniques including office-based ultrasound guided core biopsy, sentinel lymph node biopsy and  the option for immediate reconstruction with collaboration with plastic surgery. Dr. Sheth is also actively involved in a number of clinical trials.

Specializing in breast diseases, Dr. Sheth takes a holistic approach to each patient. She strives to not only assist patients with achieving a surgical cure or palliation, but to provide each patient with the emotional support during their journey. Dr. Sheth has been a Michigan resident for over 30 years.

Dr. Linda Dubay, FACS

Dr. Linda Dubay, FACSDr. Dubay is a general surgeon who specializes in breast cancer and breast health. She has been in private practice since 1993 and has been a board certified general surgeon since 1994. She started her education at The University of Michigan where she received an Honors B.S in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She began her medical training at Wayne State University, School of Medicine and completed her surgical residency at Providence Hospital, Southfield Michigan. She has worked and lived in the Metro Detroit area since starting her practice with her practice now focused at both Providence in Southfield and Providence Park in Novi.

Dr. Dubay has been the Chair of General Surgery for Providence Hospital and has held numerous leadership roles throughout the St. John Health organization. She plays an active role in the general surgery, Ob/Gyn, and Family Practice residency programs at Providence. Dr. Dubay was named surgical teacher of the year at Providence in 2005-2006. She also gives frequent breast health talks to the public, nursing staff, and physicians, including the Southeast Michigan Board review course yearly for surgical residents throughout Michigan on the topic of breast disease and cancer.

With such a special interest in breast surgery, Dr. Dubay is up-to-date and proficient in the latest surgical techniques and breast cancer treatments. She is extremely interested in breast cancer research and takes part in numerous breast cancer conferences and research trials. 

Dr. Dubay's philosophy stresses both compassionate care as well as the best cosmetic result possible using onco-plastic techniques where possible. Dr. Dubay also works with several plastic surgeons to provide immediate and delayed reconstruction of the breast. She is also involved in trials of new technology including partial breast irradiation (Mammosite), and soon … cryoablation of benign tumors.

Dr. Dubay is a Michigan native and resides here with her husband, who is also a physician, and her 3 children.

Dr. Jeffrey Falk, FACS

Dr. Jeffrey FalkDr. Falk is a Surgical Oncologist who focuses primarily on breast cancer.   Dr. Falk started his medical education at Eastern Kentucky University where he received a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry.  He then attended the University of Cincinnati where he received his medical degree. Dr. Falk then moved to Michigan where he completed his residency at William Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Falk went on to complete a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. 

After his fellowship, in 2001, Dr. Falk joined the University of Pittsburgh, Magee-Womens Hospital as Assistant Professor of Surgery.  Dr. Falk remained with the University of Pittsburgh until 2007 where he joined The St. John Health Breast Care Program.  Dr. Falk is board certified by the American Board of Surgeons.  He is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology as well as the American Society of Breast Surgeons .  Dr. Falk has affiliations with numerous professional and scientific societies.

Dr. Falk has a special interest in research and clinical trials. One of his numerous areas of interest is partial breast irradiation.  Dr. Falk speaks locally and nationally on advances in partial breast irradiation.  He has written numerous papers on all aspects of surgical care and has been the principal investigator of several breast trials. Dr. Falk performs the most cutting edge surgical techniques and breast cancer management, including skin sparing mastectomy and oncoplastic breast conserving surgery. 

Dr. Falk lives in Michigan with his wife and three children.

Dr. Don Schroder, FACS

Dr. Schroder a surgeon who has devoted much of his efforts in the diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. He strives to listen and understand his patients so that he can provide compassionate care that is tailored to each individual patient. Dr Schroder was born in South Dakota and grew up in Traverse City Michigan. He graduated supra cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1979. Dr Schroder has been fighting breast cancer since he completed medical school at Wayne State University in 1983 and completed training in surgery in 1988 at St John Hospital and Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American College of Surgeons Surgical Oncology Group.  He has been honored by awards in research and teaching as well as receiving the Hour Magazine "Top Docs" award and has been recognized as one of "America's Top Surgeons" by the Consumers' Research Council of America 2007. His goal is to treat patients with respect and to care for them as he would for his wife or daughter.
