General information about St. John Hospital's Emergency Center

See below for a video on SJH&MC's new Emergency Center from Dr. Robert Takla and Dr. Robert Sills.

In January 2009, thanks to a generous donation from the St. John Hospital Guild, and with the backing of numerous other donors and the hospital, the St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) Emergency Center (EC) completed its renovation and nearly doubled in size. We converted to all private treatment rooms, and added separate entrances for ambulatory and walk-in patients, along with several amenities.

Our new size includes:
  • 73 private treatment rooms
  • A 4-bed resuscitation suite for major trauma or critically ill patients
  • A dedicated Pediatric Emergency Medicine Center within the main Emergency Center.
  • A 16-bed Ambulatory Care center for less critical emergencies
  • A 30-bed Clinical Decision Unit, a partnership between the EC and primary care physicians for patients that need observation and additional treatment.
  • Satellite emergency campus at St. John North Shores Hospital (on Ballard in Harrison Township) and St. John Medical Center – Macomb Township (on 23 Mile Road, just west of Romeo Plank). The Macomb Township
site also offers urgent care during select hours.

Our EC has a dedicated pediatrics area and pediatric waiting area, which was generously decorated by members of the Fontbonne Auxiliary at St. John Hospital. With its life-like animal murals (painted by local muralist Jane Shook, televisions, and private location, parents and their families can treated in comfort.

More than 40 emergency medicine physicians, nearly 110 nurses, and more than 150 other staff provide care in the EC at SJH&MC. They are dedicated to continually enhancing their knowledge, and sharing that knowledge in the community. Our 12-lead EKG program is a partnership with our pre-hospital partners (EMS personnel) to provide the community with efficient diagnosis and treatment of chest pain.

The EC is the culmination of a $165 million construction project on the SJH&MC campus, which included the consolidation of many outpatient services into one convenient location, including the W. Warren Heart and Circulatory Center, Diagnostic Imaging, and Outpatient Lab.

Whether your emergency is critical or urgent, we are ready to care for you and your family.
