Medical Student Electives - Dermatology

Rotation Directors:  Bobbie Edwards, M.D. (Service 1)

                                Robert Singer, M.D. (Service 2)              

Duration:  One month

Maximum number of students per four-week period:  One

Evaluation:  Oral and written

Candidates:  Senior students of approved allopathic and osteopathic medical schools.
Description:
The general purpose for the clinical clerkship in dermatology is for the students to gain knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that primarily affect the skin and the recognition of skin changes that reflect multisystem disease.  Students should also gain applicable experience including effectively communicating with patients about understanding dermatology problems.  Students may gain knowledge and experience in the following:
  1. Simple excision
  2. Punch biopsy
  3. Shave biopsy
  4. Wedge biopsy
  5. Laser surgery
  6. Cryosurgery
  7. Electrocautery
  8. Suturing (subcutaneous sutures, cutaneous sutures, learning names and uses of sutures, ligating vessels)
  9. I & D cysts
  10. Mohs surgery
    1. Gain knowledge of method of Mohs surgery.
    2. Gain knowledge of indications for Mohs surgery.
  11. Identification and treatment of the following malignancies:
    1. Basal Cell Carcinoma including subtypes
    2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma including subtypes
    3. Melanoma, including subtypes, major clinical categories, prognostic and therapeutic guidelines
    4. Paget’s disease
    5. Cutaneous lymphoma
    6. Kaposi’s sarcoma
    7. Metastases to the skin
  12. Identification and treatment of the following premalignant conditions:
    1. Squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s disease)
    2. Actinic keratosis
    3. Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis
    4. Leukoplakia
    5. Keratoacanthoma
    6. Erythroplakia
    7. Premelanoma, including lentigo maligna, giant congenital nevus, dysplastic nevus syndrome
