It is imperative that the day time intern confer with the nighttime intern regarding any critical patients prior to leaving the hospital. Interns on either shift are responsible for evaluating all critical patients as soon as possible after going on duty.

Meal Checks

Residents and interns will receive a meal allowance at the beginning of each month. Housestaff who are on an in-house rotation will receive an allowance of $300. Those residents who are on out rotations but return to St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center, for night call will receive $10 per call.

Unplanned illness or personal emergencies

In the case of absence due to illness, injury or personal emergency, housestaff are required to notify the Office of Medical Education as well as their attending physician and resident by the start of their assigned shift. Failure to notify the appropriate staff will result in disciplinary action. Any absence due to illness that extends beyond three (3) days requires documentation by the resident’s physician. When returning from any absence due to illness, bereavement or personal emergency, residents and interns MUST notify the Office of Medical Education on the day they return to work. Resident and interns are responsible for completing all required paperwork for leaves of absence as outlined in the St John’s Health System Policy. Interns and residents who go on interviews must use either vacation time or personal leave time for all interviews. Housestaff who fail to obtain approval as outlined above will be docked pay for the time off and may be subject to disciplinary action.

Maternity/Paternity Leave

In accordance with federal and AOA guidelines, residents may take up to six weeks after they deliver or eight weeks post caesarian section as their physician deems necessary. AOA regulations require that all leave time except for vacation and personal time be made up at the end of the contract year prior to advancing to the next level of training or before completing their training program.

Note: Residents may use up to five days of personal time for paternity leave. A request for Time Off form must be completed.

Adoption Leave

Residents who wish to take leave following the adoption of a child may take up to six weeks of personal leave without pay. Residents may use available vacation hours as part of this leave. Completion of St. John Health System leave of absence forms must be completed prior to the first day of the leave time. AOA regulations require that all leave time beyond sick and vacation time be made up at the end of the contract year before advancing to the next level of training.

AOA Memberships

All housestaff members are required to maintain membership in the American Osteopathic Association. The Department of Medical Education will pay your base membership dues. Please bring any billing notices you receive to the Department of Medical Education. The AOA serves as a valuable resource for you and your membership is your chance to become involved in the future of osteopathic medicine.

Malpractice Insurance

Medical malpractice insurance will be provided for you by the St. John Health System. Your malpractice insurance will cover your professional activities that are deemed a requirement of your graduate medical education training. Any moonlighting activities that residents participate in will NOT be covered by the St. John Health System policy. In the event that a legal investigation takes place, residents have the responsibility to cooperate with the legal counsel of the St. John Health System. Failure to comply with this will result in the loss of indemnification and/or hospital retained legal representation.
