In some cases, hospitalization for your chronic headaches/migraines may be necessary. If an inpatient stay is deemed appropriate, your hospitalization will likely range from four to six days or longer depending on your progress. Admission to the hospital may occur on the same day as your initial visit, however, can occur at any time during your treatment at the Institute.
Criteria for Inpatient Admission
The program’s Medical Director, Dr. Almsaddi, will evaluate you as a candidate for the inpatient unit based on the following admission criteria:
-
Dependence on and/or excessive use of medication, that if abruptly stopped could precipitate withdrawal symptoms.
-
Persistent pain which has been unresponsive to outpatient treatment, and requires injectable medication to break the “headache cycle.”
-
Pain associated with persistent nausea and vomiting causing dehydration
-
Severe pain associated with the likelihood of other medical diseases or emotional illness
-
Acute headache pain with additional symptoms suggestive of a stroke or other serious neurological event
