Individuals may experience changes in their emotional and psychological funtioning following a traumatic brain injury. This is often in addition to the cognitive and physical deficits they may be experiencing. Changes in emotional and psychological functioning may include issues such as:

• Adjustment to Injury
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Personality Changes
• Marital Difficulties
• Irritability/Anger Issues
• Sleep Disturbance
• Social Withdrawal
• Parenting Issues
• Educational/Employment Challenges

In counseling, clients are provided information on Traumatic Brain Injury to aid in their understanding of the recovery process and role of rehabilitation. Information obtained in the social history assists the clients and therapist in determining areas of change and stress since the injury. Clients then begin the process of resolving issues they have identified as problems. They are encouraged to identify their fears and concerns, and learn new approaches to effectively manage challenges. Family members or friends are involved in counseling sessions as is appropriate.

Social Work services are provided by a Licensed Master Social Work level counselor, with a Brain Injury Specialist certification. Therapy may be conducted in individual, family, or group settings. Treatment techniques may include reality therapy, behavioral therapy, assertiveness training, relaxation techniques, and community based supports.

The Social worker utilizes a team approach with other involved disciplines to ensure your goals are met on an individual basis.
