Therapeutic Recreation

NRS therapeutic recreationFollowing a traumatic brain injury, you may not be able to immediately return to your previous employment, school, or homemaker role. As a result, large blocks of free time may be available. The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) puts knowledge and experience to work helping you choose recreation activities/programs and agencies to promote increased physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Comprehensive Therapeutic Recreation services involve a continuum of care including:

  • Treatment: Individual or group sessions that use activities to rehabilitate or restore your functional abilities.
  • Leisure Education: Training and education that focus on activities to acquire skills, knowledge, and attitudes to facilitate an independent leisure lifestyle.
  • Recreation Participation: Promote learning or relearning activities with adaptations to enhance growth and independence through leisure choices.

The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist uses a variety of settings for treatment. Services can be offered in the clinic, the aquatic pool, or in the community (malls, bowling alleys, stores, etc). Evaluations can also be completed for: riding bicycles, roller blading, residential/intersections community safety, topographical orientation, swimming, home safety, utilizing community transportation, and more.

Therapeutic Recreation utilizes a team approach with other involved disciplines to ensure your goals are met on an individual basis.
