Patient Information
Craniofacial dystosis, or Crouzon’s syndrome is a rare deformity identified at birth caused by a genetic alteration. Characteristics include a tower shaped skull, underdeveloped midface with receded cheekbones and bulging, wide set eyes. Visual disturbances are caused by imbalance of the muscles that control the eyes and hearing loss is caused by frequent ear infections. Mental capacity is usually normal, although some experience mental delay. Multiple staged surgeries to achieve skull reshaping is done as the child grows. Aperts is very similar to Crouzens Syndrome. It also includes limb abnormalities such as webbing of the middle digits of the hands and feet.
