St. John Health Offers State's First Physician-led Breastfeeding Clinic
New mothers planning to breastfeed their babies now have access to a unique program with the opening of the St. John Health Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic. The clinic is the first physician-led clinic of its kind in Michigan.
Making the choice to breastfeed is one of the most precious gifts that a mother can give her newborn. Approximately 60 percent of women in our community initiate breastfeeding, but at the three-month point, many have given up.
At the new St. John Health Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic, mothers meet with specially trained lactation consultants who observe and assess them during a feeding. Mothers also work directly with the Clinic’s medical director, Paula Schreck, MD, to solve their issues and make breastfeeding a beneficial experience for both mother and infant.
"We can help nearly every mother and infant," said Dr. Schreck. "Many times women quit breastfeeding because of difficulties they encounter; insufficient milk supply, painful breastfeeding, or poor weight gain in the infant. We can help with all those difficulties enabling women to find success in breastfeeding which greatly benefits their infants."
