The Physical Rehabilitation and Therapy department at St. John North Shores Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient care and outpatient services in physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, psychology, rehabilitation nursing and social work.
After assessing and evaluating a patient’s physical and cognitive abilities, an individualized rehabilitation program is established for the patient. Together, the patient, their family members and rehabilitation specialists, set realistic goals that help to maximize the patient’s independence.
The provision of therapy services enables people to make the most of life - physically, mentally, and socially. A variety of services are offered to individuals experiencing a wide range of conditions. Therapy enhances the independent function of individuals so they can participate in daily activities. Mastery of these skills allows them to resume roles within their family, community and workplace.

Occupational Therapy
St. John Occupational Therapy (OT) utilizes activities that improve individuals’ skills and adapt the environment to allow individuals to achieve greater levels of independence. The goal is to return people to the “occupation” of living. Occupational Therapists and Assistants work toward the individuals’ full recovery. When this is not possible, OT’s will instruct the individuals, families, and caregivers in compensation techniques and the use of adaptive devices such as modifi ed clothing, eating devices, and toileting aides.
Physical Therapy
St. John Physical Therapy (PT) provides evaluation and treatment of problems related to muscles, nerves and joints - conditions that limit an individual’s ability to function. The Physical Therapy team works toward regaining function through strengthening and re-educating weak muscles, increasing joint motion, helping individuals reduce and manage musculoskeletal pain, and restoring movement and function. A component of PT is directed at preventing injury and loss of movement as well as educating the individual regarding management of their condition.
Speech-Language Pathology
St. John Speech& Language Pathology (SLP)helps individuals regain communication and/or swallowing skills. Speech& Language Pathologists use a variety of techniques to help improve speech, comprehension, reading, writing, reasoning, memory and attention. They also assist individuals with swallowing impairments, to maximize nutritional intake through diet modifi cations while instructing families and caregivers in these compensatory techniques.
