About Our Program

Thank you for your interest in the pre- and postgraduate training programs at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center. We are proud of our hospital's long tradition of excellence in osteopathic medical education and look forward to extending you an invitation to work and learn within our clinical campus.

Located in a northern suburb of Detroit, St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center, is a 210-bed community based osteopathic hospital with a long history of providing high quality osteopathic medical education and patient care. We provide extern rotations in over 27 clinical areas and offer postgraduate training in three track and an expanding number of special emphasis internship programs, 11 residency programs, and two fellowship programs (gastroenterology and otolaryngic allergy).

At St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center, we pride ourselves in the quality of our clinical teaching and the breadth of pathology to which you will be exposed. Talented generalists and specialists run our hospital-based services and we continue to offer an ever-expanding exposure to excellent outpatient rotations. Clinical teaching rounds are complemented by at least two daily lectures, as well as numerous other formal educational offerings, such as special lectures, journal clubs, and review courses.

We are also committed to providing you access to state-of-the-art educational resources. Our medical library has an extensive holding of resource books and journals. Computers with high-speed Internet connections are located in the library and throughout the hospital providing access to numerous web-based medical resources. Our medical education classroom is fitted with video teleconferencing equipment allowing our hospital to participate in long distance educational conferences with university based faculty from around the country.

St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center, has affiliations with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City, and the Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center, is a founding and Primary Member of the Michigan State University Statewide Campus System (formerly known as COGMET) and our students, interns and residents benefit by participating in the numerous educational programs offered through the Statewide Campus System.

In addition to the above resources, house staff at Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Oakland Center, have access to the extensive clinical resources located within the much larger St. John Health system. St. John Health is an integrated health care system containing three AOA accredited osteopathic teaching hospitals and two tertiary care allopathic teaching hospitals, St. John Hospital and Providence Hospital and Medical Center.  These resources amount to more than 1,800 hospital beds, 47 extern rotations, 6 internship tracks, 52 residency programs (AOA and ACGME approved), and 7 fellowship programs. In aggregate, St. John Health may well be one of the largest integrated osteopathic clinical campuses in the country.

Graduates from St. John Health programs may be offered opportunities for placement into one of the many existing or expanding primary care and subspecialty practices providing care to patients within the system. And if you are planning on relocating, the national recognition of the St. John Health will complement your credentials wherever you may elect to practice in the future.
