Steven D. Harrington, MD
Hospital Privileges: St. John Hospital and Medical Center, St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital
Steven Harrington, MD, has been a leader in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at St. John Hospital and Medical Center since 1988. He has been at the forefront of new procedures in cardiovascular surgery including minimally invasive surgery that dramatically reduces scarring and improves recovery time for patients undergoing the procedure. He was the first physician in the state and one of the first in the country to use the Port-Access, minimally invasive surgery procedure using video-assisted cameras to repair or replace malfunctioning heart valves. Unlike traditional surgery that necessitates a 12-15 inch incision through the breastbone, Port-Access allows surgeons to operate through a small incision, or port, about 2 inches long. This allows repairing or replacing diseased valves without separating the ribs. The result includes less pain for the patient and a quicker recovery. Dr. Harrington received his medical degree from Wayne State University and has been trained in robotic assisted surgery for cardiovascular and thoracic treatment as well as numerous other advanced procedures for cardiovascular and thoracic disease. Dr. Harrington was recognized by Hour Detroit magazine as a Top Doc in cardiovascular surgery in 2007 and 2008.
