Providence Orthopaedic - Joint Replacement

Why Do You Need a Hip or Knee Replacement?

Providence Hospital has been designated a Joint Replacement Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Joint Replacement Providence Hospital Men Playing RaquetballThe probable culprit is osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. If you’re like most joint replacement patients, you’re often in pain. More importantly, your pain may keep you from doing the things you enjoy. Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, causes wear and tear that eventually breaks down the cartilage that covers the end of each bone in a joint. When this cartilage is gone, there is nothing left to guard your bones. The bones grind against each other causing inflammation, pain, and stiffness. A hip or knee replacement substitutes your worn joint with new metal and plastic parts. Although medicines can reduce your pain temporarily, a joint replacement is your best bet for lasting relief and a more active life.

We're Here to Help

Providence holds frequent discussion seminars to give you the information necessary to make your decision. A pathway brochure and a patient education booklet outline the step-by step process you’ll experience. Both are available from your physician. Once you choose to have your joint replaced, it’s likely you’ll have even more questions. If you’re ever in doubt about something, or just need information, please ask a member of your medical team.

The St. John Providence Hospital Joint Replacement Program is recognized by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as a joint replacement center of excellence. We perform over 750 joint replacements annually.

For more information about the Joint Replacement Program at Providence Hospital, please contact Pete Rogers, Orthopedic Services Coordinator, at 248-849-2569.
