Why Do You Need a Hip or Knee Replacement?
The probable culprit is osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. If you’re like most joint replacement patients, you’re often in pain. More importantly, your pain may keep you from doing the things you enjoy. Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, causes wear and tear that eventually breaks down the cartilage that covers the end of each bone in a joint. When this cartilage is gone, there is nothing left to guard your bones. The bones grind against each other causing inflammation, pain, and stiffness. A hip or knee replacement substitutes your worn joint with new metal and plastic parts. Although medicines can reduce your pain temporarily, a joint replacement is your best bet for lasting relief and a more active life.

Dr. Higginbotham joined Providence Hospital in 1999 where he is the Clinical Instructor for Orthopedics. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois, College of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at Mt.
