Providence Hospital is once again ranked as one the top 100 hospitals in the United States for heart care, according to an independent national study. Providence is the only hospital in southeast Michigan to receive this recognition six years in a row and the only center in Oakland County to be honored in 2006.

Providence is recognized by the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Hospitals® Benchmarks for Success study, which identifies those hospitals that have achieved excellence in care, efficiency of operations and sustainability of cardiovascular performance. The study focused on hospitals that treat high volumes of heart attack patients and perform large numbers of specific heart-related procedures such as bypass grafts and angioplasties. Providence was one of only 30 teaching hospitals with cardiovascular residency programs listed.

"This recognition is a reflection of the commitment our staff has to providing patients with the most compassionate and advanced heart care available anywhere," says Shukri David, M.D., chief of cardiology at Providence Hospital.

"It is great to be recognized for the sixth straight year as a top 100 heart hospital.  Our community can take great comfort knowing that one of the nation's top hospitals for heart care is right in their neighborhood," says Chris Southwick, administrative director of cardiovascular services at Providence.

In its eighth year, the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study identifies hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation.

The study found that top-performing facilities consistently outperform their peers, especially in terms of mortality and complication rates.  According to the study, if all hospitals in the study achieved the success levels of the Solucient top hospitals, 8,000 additional cardiovascular patients could survive each year and an additional 575 patients could be complication-free.

Solucient, a Thomson healthcare business, based in Evanston, Ill., provides strategic information to the healthcare industry. More information about the results of this study is available at www.100tophospitals.com.

Providence Hospital is a member of St. John Health and the St. John Health Heart Care Network, the leading provider of heart care in Michigan. The Providence Heart Institute offers comprehensive cardiovascular services including high-speed diagnostic testing, interventional and surgical treatments, electrophysiology, emergency services, inpatient nursing, prevention and rehabilitation, clinical research and highly specialized clinics for lipid management, pulmonary hypertension and adult congenital heart disease.   The Providence Heart Institute was recently named a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Center of Cardiac Excellence.
