Eastwood Clinics Inservice - To Be or Not To Be...Suicide, Suicidal Clients and Survivors of Suicide

Presenter: Donald Healy, LMSW, CAAC-R, LMFT

Objectives: To increase understanding of the rates and risks of suicide among different groups and diagnoses of clients and the myths and truths about suicide. To improve your risk assessment by better understanding the thinking and beliefs of suicidal clients and touch on some of the neurobiological processes; also to broaden your treatment responses through increased awareness of the range of options, techniques and approaches. Lastly, to provide a new way of thinking about suicide through discussion about surviving suicide, in professional or personal contexts.

Eastwood Clinics Inservice - Helping Vulnerable Children & Adolescents Become Resilient

Presenter: Chris Nixon, LMSW, CAAC-R

Participants will gain a better understanding of the dynamics of bullying including etiology, emotional regulation and who is at risk (both the victim and the perpetrator). Strategies for developing integrated interventions will be offered as well as therapeutic approaches to build resiliency into the treatment goals. Upon completion of the course participants should: 1) Better conceptualize how the vulnerable include the one who bullies, i.e. the perpetrator as well as the bullied, i.e. the victim; 2) Learn how to intervene and incorporate strategies among schools and families and 3) Incorporate resiliency into an effective therapeutic approach.

Participants will: 1) Learn about HIV/AIDS transmission and disease process; 2) Be able to identify at least two high risk groups, with particular attention to youth and elderly; 3) Be able to identity two testing processes for HIV/AIDS.

Eastwood Clinics Inservice - Therapeutic Approaches to Pain Management

Presenters: Tammy Domroese, PsyD, LLP and Dennis Muzzi, LMSW

To increase understanding of neurobiology; To be able to identify how various parts and functions of the central nervous system are affected by addiction, abuse, disease, illness, pain and opioid pain treatment. These aspects are: hormonal, neurotransmitter, limbic system, frontal cortex, and other neural pathways. To understand the components of the presenters’ pain management program, including the alternative approaches used and referred to, as well as beginning anecdotal data about effectiveness. To learn some of the clients own solutions to their enduring pain challenges. To learn more about how chronic pain affects the lives of people, including how biases within the health care system stigmatize people. This will be drawn from anecdotal evidence from clients in the pain program. To understand how brain functioning is related to withdrawal, recovery and other substance abuse treatment considerations. To have an understanding of the presenters’ developing, integrative model of substance abuse treatment. To increase knowledge of general pain management concepts and to be able to assess when such dynamics are primary in a case and how this changes the recommended approach.

Objectives: Provide participants with specific skills to address the criminal offender population and substance-abusing offenders. Overview of the criminal justice process and substance abuse treatment offered in the Federal system.
Provide an outline for developing a Manualized approach to individual counseling.

Participants will be able to: Describe the reasons behind the self care initiative; Identify his or her level of compassion fatigue; Discuss the concept of compassion fatigue; Discuss self-soothing care activities in relation to renewal of self; Discuss the relationship between connecting with self and spirituality.
