Attendees of this course will learn to: Identify aspects of male socialization that inhibit or prohibit engagement in the treatment process; Identify how most treatment approacheds are designed around female socialization and may not be as accessible to men; Explore techniques, approaches and philosophies to transcend these barriers to better serve the men in our communities.

Eastwood Clinics Inservice - Internal Family System Therapy

Presenter: Jim Wratkowski, LMSW

1) Introduce participants to a non-pathological treatment model that integrates psychodynamic and family systems therapy. 2) Familiarize participants with a way of helping clients look at themselves as having multiple aspects or "parts" to their personality, some of which may be in conflict or can be polarized from each other.  3) Help participants develop appreciation of how even some "extreme" parts started out with an original helpful mission or purpose, but became extreme for some understandable reason (not yet revealed to the person or apparent to the therapist).

Eastwood Clinics Inservice - Applied Ethics & Legal Coordination

Presenters: Ryan Ewles, JD, Craig McLean, LMSW, ACSW, CFAE, Leo Niffeler, LMSW, ACSW, Michelle Mualem, LMSW, ACSW, CPHQ, CAAC-R, CCS-M and Judge Lynne Pierce. 

This course is designed for the clinical practitioner. At the end of this presentation the participant will: 1) Be able to discern what are actual legal expectations and how to balance that with treatment ethics; 2) Review different types of legal matters that have potential for interfering with the treatment process and goals; 3) Understand how to better advocate on behalf of the patient/client without getting triangulated into a legal situation; 4) Understand when to get their own legal council and how to appropriately partner with an attorney; 5) Be able to identify different strategies for establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries with attorneys and courts. This course is similar to Providers Have Rights Too: Applied Ethics and Legal Coordination provided in September 2008.

Eastwood Clinics Inservice - Therapeutic Approaches to Pain Management

Presenters: Tammy Domroese, PsyD, LLP and Dennis Muzzi, LMSW

To increase understanding of neurobiology; To be able to identify how various parts and functions of the central nervous system are affected by addiction, abuse, disease, illness, pain and opioid pain treatment. These aspects are: hormonal, neurotransmitter, limbic system, frontal cortex, and other neural pathways. To understand the components of the presenters’ pain management program, including the alternative approaches used and referred to, as well as beginning anecdotal data about effectiveness. To learn some of the clients own solutions to their enduring pain challenges. To learn more about how chronic pain affects the lives of people, including how biases within the health care system stigmatize people. This will be drawn from anecdotal evidence from clients in the pain program. To understand how brain functioning is related to withdrawal, recovery and other substance abuse treatment considerations. To have an understanding of the presenters’ developing, integrative model of substance abuse treatment. To increase knowledge of general pain management concepts and to be able to assess when such dynamics are primary in a case and how this changes the recommended approach.
