Medical Student Electives - Cardiovascular ICURotation Director: Delano Small, M.D. Duration: One month Maximum number of students per four-week period: Two Candidates: Senior students of approved allopathic and osteopathic medical schools Evaluation: Oral and written Description: The CV-ICU handles over 1,000 patients annually and this elective provides an opportunity to participate in the care of acute cardiac emergencies. The student participates in all aspects of care for the critically ill cardiac patient, including invasive hemodynamic monitoring. All non-invasive cardiac diagnostic studies, including exercise testing, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and transesophageal echocardiogram procedures are done routinely. The students have the opportunity to participate in these activities under close supervision from residents, fellows, cardiologists and intensivists assigned to the cardiac unit. Students also attend weekly cardiology lectures including EKG interpretation, fellow-led lectures for all rotating residents and students, echocardiography conferences, catheterization conferences and cardiology Grand Rounds. Workweek: 5 days; 3-5 calls per month
