Medical Student Electives - Hospitalist Sub-Internship

Rotation Director:  Assigned Hospitalist

Duration:  One month

Candidates:  Senior students of approved medical schools

Maximum number of student per four-week period:  One

Description:
The general purpose for the Hospitalist Sub-Internship rotation is to expose medical students to a non-resident driven inpatient system typical of many hospital systems, to further develop clinical skills in assessment, treatment, and discharge planning and to further develop skills to coordinate care plans across other physician co-workers as well as physician extenders.  Students will perform H and Ps on new patients and follow consults under the direct supervision of a hospitalist physician.  Students will work 12-14 day shifts and 4-6 evening shifts (4 pm - 12 midnight).  Primary responsibilities will be management of  a small number of inpatients, performing admissions and cross-covering current inpatients, all with attending supervision.  Students will be expected to attend daily discharge rounds while working on the day shifts.  Students will also meet with the billing and coding team to understand the fundamentals of inpatient billing.

Evaluation:
At the end of the rotation, the Rotation Director will collect data from the supervising physician and other medical team members and complete a written evaluation of the student that is reflective of the student’s academic competence, procedural proficiency and professional attributes.  Medical students will be asked to evaluate the rotation at the end of the month.
