Cardiac Rehabilitation at Providence

The cardiac rehabilitation program rounds out the complete range of cardiac services offered by Providence Hospital.  Providence provides a multi-disciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of medical and surgical cardiac patients.  The three-phase program is designed to help cardiac patients combat coronary artery disease and make a lifelong commitment to exercise and good health.

Phase I
Phase I occurs when you are still hospitalized.  Questions and concerns regarding diagnostic tests, medications, diet, activity and restrictions are addressed by staff members, including your doctor, nurse and dietitian.  Exercise physiologists and registered nurses are also present to teach you how to monitor your pulse and exercise safely during recovery.  The primary goal of Phase I is to return patients to activities of daily living.

Phase II
Phase II is an outpatient program where you return to a secondary care program three times a week.  This phase helps improve your cardiovascular system and educates you on exercise, nutrition, stress management and other pertinent topics.  Phase II combines a supervised exercise program, where you are monitored by an electrocardiogram (ECG), and a risk factor modification program, designed to assist you in achieving an optimal lifestyle.  Phase II lasts over a period of several weeks and is offered at Providence’s Heart Institute in Southfield.

Phase III
Phase III is a community-based exercise maintenance program designed to help adults maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Phase III offers continued supervision and independent exercise sessions with an educational component, designed to continue to reduce a patient’s risk of coronary disease.

The purpose of Phase III is to reinforce the lifelong commitment to an altered lifestyle and to enhance an individual’s quality of life. Phase III is offered at the Providence Heart Institute in Southfield .
