What is a Midwife?
The word midwife has been used for centuries to describe a woman who is "with women" at birth. A midwife was traditionally an older female in the family or the community. Today, the word indicates a philosophy of care that focuses on the specific needs of women, offers a variety of options, and minimizes unnecessary intervention.
Why should you choose a Certified Nurse Midwife?
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) offer a variety of high quality healthcare services for women. CNMs provide preconceptual counseling, care and support during pregnancy and childbirth, normal gynecological services, and care of the menopausal woman. CNMs emphasize health promotion, education, and disease prevention. With health education as a primary focus, CNMs help prevent problems and assist women in developing and maintaining good health habits. Extra time is provided for questions and answers.
How does a Certified Nurse Midwife differ from a physician?
The Certified Nurse Midwives with our practice have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in addition to a Master’s Degree in Science. Certified Nurse Midwives care for low-risk, healthy women and make referrals to an obstetrician/gynecologist when needed. Certified Nurse Midwives often spend additional time with patients during prenatal care and gynecological visits and provide labor support during childbirth.
What if something goes wrong during my labor or birth?
Certified Nurse Midwives work collaboratively with a group of physicians that are available in the event that a pregnancy or labor become high risk.
Is pain medication available during my labor and birth if I choose a Nurse Midwife?
Yes. Women who choose a Certified Nurse Midwife for their care provider have the same pain medication options as a woman who chooses a physician. Epidurals are available as well as intravenous pain medication. Certified Nurse Midwives are also able to provide alternative methods of pain relief to women.
What is the difference between the Alternative Birthing Center and a traditional Labor and Delivery Unit?
The Alternative Birthing Center is available to low risk women. The unit provides a more natural approach to labor and birth and minimizes unnecessary intervention. Additional amenities include queen sized beds and the use of jacuzzi tubs, birthing balls, and birthing stools. Families and labor coaches are encouraged to play an active role in the birthing process at the Alternative Birthing Center.
Will my insurance cover a Certified Nurse Midwife?
Midwifery care is covered under most insurance policies. There is no additional cost for the use of a Nurse Midwife or the Alternative Birthing Center. Please call one of our offices to find out more information.
