Introduction
The Fellowship training program at Providence Hospital is dedicated to providing community-based education in Primary Care Sports Medicine to the residency trained Primary Care Physician. The goal is to enhance the knowledge and procedural skills of the resident caring for the active or athletic individual while maintaining their Primary Care skills. To achieve this goal, the resident of this program rotates through the Sports Medicine Clinic, in addition to maintaining continuity care office hours. Training room experience, event coverage including the Detroit Marathon, didactic sessions, medical student and resident education all serve as integral parts of the training program. The strengths of the program include:
- A broad, diversified clinical experience.
- Fellowship trained faculty members.
- Community-based institution with a strong background in Graduate Medical Education.
Resident Selection Criteria
Each candidate must be board certified/ board eligible in a primary care field. Candidates must take part in the Specialties Matching Service of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates are selected based on achievements in Medical School, Residency, research experience, academic experience, field experience, letters of recommendation, and a personal interview.

Accreditation
The Providence Hospital Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Fellow Assessment
Residents will be evaluated on a quarterly basis by program faculty members. In addition, monthly evaluations will be obtained for any specialty rotations. Documentation of procedural skills obtained will be maintained.
Faculty Members
The Providence Sports Medicine Program is staffed by a diverse clinical faculty representing the specialties relevant to providing a comprehensive educational experience in Primary Care Sports Medicine. The Primary Care members include fellowship trained Family Physicians and members with Certificates of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. In addition, a diverse Orthopedics Section, large physical therapy department, experienced athletic trainer, exercise physiologist, and a variety of specialists with interest in sports medicine further enhance the quality of the faculty.
