Family Medicine/Adult Medicine
The department of Family Medicine conducts inpatient teaching service. Family medicine attending staff and residents admit to the service (includes adults, children and antenatal patients). Family medicine residents have full responsibility for patient management under the supervision of the program director, the faculty and the attending staff. Each third-year resident serves as the chief resident on the floor. Each second-year resident serves as associate chief resident on the inpatient service and as the night block resident. Each first-year resident spends five months on the service. Teaching rounds are conducted by the faculty and the attending staff. Internal medicine and family medicine hold a combined Grand Rounds each week. Interns rotate short call for evening hours and weekend calls, with onsite supervision by a senior resident. Senior residents rotates through night block for overnight coverage.

Obstetrics and Gynecology
Obstetricians and family physicians from Providence Hospital deliver more than 4,000 babies each year at Providence Hospital. The New Life Center at Providence Hospital is a premier labor and delivery, high-risk obstetrics and neonatal intensive care facility. Family Medicine residents spend two months on the Obstetrics service at Providence Hospital during the first year and two months Obstetrics/Gynecology during the second year. An additional two months of training are recommended for residents planning to continue birthing after graduation. The Alternative Birthing Center is available for low risk deliveries. Residents also provide continuing prenatal care and delivery through their office practice.

Pediatrics
The residency provides five months of pediatric experience. The first year includes inpatient pediatrics and neonatology at Providence. Second-year residents rotate in outpatient pediatrics. Two months of outpatient pediatric experience in a private pediatric attending physician's office is included in Years Two and Three. One month of pediatric emergency medicine is scheduled in the third year to update procedural skills and knowledge. Children requiring hospital care are admitted to the Family Medicine Inpatient Service.

General Surgery
Residents rotate on the general surgery (inpatient) service at Providence Hospital for one month. A second year rotation in the center for outpatient surgery trains residents in basic surgical skills used in office practice. Residents are assigned to preoperative and postoperative surgical care and work under the supervision of the surgical educational coordinator. Call is every fourth night with the second call surgical resident, where emphasis is on learning the diagnosis and management of acute surgical problems.

Cardiology
One month is spent in outpatient cardiology and in the CCU at Providence Hospital. Providence Hospital has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for Cardiology.

Intensive Care
The intensive care unit at Providence Hospital is a 12-bed unit staffed by three full-time intensivists and two critical care fellows. Family Medicine residents spend one month on the unit in Year 2 to gain experience and insight into procedures and the type of care provided in life-threatening situations.

Emergency Medicine
Residents have a one month experience in the Emergency Medicine department at Providence Hospital. This is an active service, with an annual volume of approximately 50,000 patients. Providence Hospital is a designated trauma center for southern Oakland County, the second largest county in Michigan. Shifts are assigned in the afternoon and evening when the E.R. is most active. Residents may rotate to the suburban emergency department at Providence Park, which sees 30,000 visits annually.

Surgical Subspecialties
This is a two-month longitudinal training experience in ophthalmology, otolaryngology and urology taken during the third year of the residency program. The training is primarily in outpatient surgery and office-based practice.

Orthopedics/Sports Medicine
The orthopedic rotation is a one month experience with orthopedic surgeons. Providence has family physicians who specializes in Sports Medicine and offers a Sports Medicine Fellowship. Residents participate in a Sports Medicine Curriculum, and may schedule an elective in sport medicine.

Family & Behavioral Medicine
This rotation includes: Inpatient psychiatric consultations, observation of outpatient psychiatric visits, site visits to community agencies, participation in free clinics, research.

Geriatrics
An active, interdisciplinary program exists with a teaching nursing home, hospice, day care center and an ambulatory living complex. Geriatrics is as an ongoing longitudinal experience in the second and third years of the residency.

Family Medicine Centers
Providence Hospital operates two Family Medicine Centers to provide residents with the opportunity to train in either an urban/suburban or rural practice. The two settings also provide access to different patient populations and to a wide range of clinical problems.

Murray N. Deighton, MD, Family Practice Center, Southfield
Eighteen residents and nine faculty conduct a model urban/suburban practice in an attractive, 11,000 sq. ft. office on the fifth floor of the Providence Medical Building. Residents work with the faculty, and nurse clinicians to see nearly 32,000 patients per year. The Center is located on the main campus of the hospital with direct access to inpatient floors, the immediate availability of consultants in every specialty and the convenience of the full diagnostic and therapeutic resources of the main hospital. The Center is named for the late Dr. Murray Deighton who served as chairman and program director in Family Medicine from 1975 through 1986 and who was largely responsible for the establishment of the Family Medicine residency program at Providence Hospital.
The patient population seen at the Deighton Center is diverse in terms of race, culture and economic characteristics. Patients are seen from the affluent northern and western suburbs as well as patients from the city of Detroit. Southfield itself is an upper middle-class, racially integrated community. Families present with a full range of physical and psychological problems.

Providence Medical Center - South Lyon
Nine residents and six faculty conduct a model rural and small town practice in a well equipped 5,000 sq. ft. office. South Lyon is located 26 miles west of Providence Hospital. Three first-year residents are selected to receive all three years of ambulatory experience in South Lyon. Residents, faculty, and a physician assistant see more that 19,000 patients per year. The patient population includes all age ranges from middle and lower income families. Many of our patients/families are young and have a single head of household. Our office is the only practice in the area to accept Medicaid. The area has a growing population of Spanish speaking patients.

Electives
Four one-month elective periods have been provided in the program. Any of the disciplines of the regular curriculum can be arranged as an elective experience to compensate for individual weaknesses or to enhance special areas of interest. A resident may choose a one-month experience in any of the following electives: Allergy, Anesthesia, Community Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General, International Medicine, Medical Specialties, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Oncology/Hematology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Proctology, Pulmonary, Sports Medicine, Outpatient Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Research, Office Preceptorship. Other electives may be arranged on an individual basis.
