Description:
The Section of Orthopedics is in an excellent position to present to the senior students a comprehensive outline of the spectrum of orthopedic surgery as practiced in a community hospital. There is a large volume of elective Orthopedic Surgery done at Providence Hospital as well as a very active Emergency Department presenting a variety of Orthopedic Trauma.

Daily Activities and Responsibilities for Medical Students:

1) The student is encouraged to scrub and assist in surgery. The student will be integrated into the Orthopedic Surgery Team. They will participate in rounds and all aspects of patient care. They will have the opportunity to see patients in the outpatient setting. In preparation for surgery and the care of all patients, the student is expected to read surgical and anatomic text. These are available in the Orthopedic Surgery Office as well as in the hospital library .The students are expected to perform an examination and take their own Orthopedic history and exam on the patients in the preoperative unit. They will also be expected to participate in the examination of patients while on the floor. In addition to surgery and staff rounds, the student is welcome and encouraged to attend case management rounds on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays with our nurse practitioner as well as the physical therapy, occupational therapist, social workers, and nursing staff on the dedicated orthopedic unit. In this way, the students will learn about the comprehensive care of orthopedic surgery patients including discharge planning and pathway management. The students will also be expected to attend the Orthopedic Surgery Conferences. They are twice weekly attending surgery lectures and meetings as well as a Thursday morning x-ray conference where x-rays of inpatients and outpatients are reviewed and discussed by the entire staff, and an extended Wednesday conference at Wayne State University. In this way, the students will become aware of the differences of alternative methods of treatment, differences of option and the expected modalities for caring for patients with orthopedic and other musculoskeletal diseases.

2) In all aspects of patient care, the medical students will be supervised by the attending and senior resident staff. Both before, during and after surgery the student will participate in rounds and be integrated into the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Team. Under the supervision of the attending, each case will be discussed from a pre-operative and post-operative standpoint. In addition, there are a number of Orthopedic patients in the hospital who do not require surgery and are undergoing non-operative management. The student learns the principles of traction and balanced suspension.
3) Academic Values: A significant percentage of patient treatments in the field of medicine are musculoskeletal in nature and fall in the realm of Orthopedics. For this reason, exposure to Orthopedics would be of value to most medical students but especially those interested in Orthopedic Surgery or Family Practice. We feel that we are in a position to offer just such exposure in an interesting and profitable manner.
