Description:
The elective is designed to expose the student to management of acute and chronic respiratory disease, pulmonary diagnostic studies, (PFTs, ABGs, X-ray), fiberoptic bronchoscopy and respiratory therapy services. Several objectives have been set for the pulmonary program:
1. To reinforce the fundamental role of gas exchange, acid-base between and aspects of the basic sciences related to Pulmonary Medicine.
2. To gain experience with both common and unusual pulmonary diseases in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. These include pneumonia, asthma, COPD, lung nodules, cough and dyspnea.
3. To become acquainted with respiratory therapy treatment including oxygen administration, physiotherapy modalities and principles of ventilator management.
4. To gain understanding of pulmonary function laboratory procedures by direct observation and participation in the PFT laboratory.
5. T observe clinical procedures such as bronchoscopy, thoraocentesis as part of the clinical management of pulmonary disease.
