Academic Value:
In conjunction with the various teaching conferences and rounds at Providence Hospital, there is direct academic value in the learning of basic art and science of Urology.  This combined with the great clinical value of bedside teaching rounds, operating room experience, cystoscopy experience and office practice experience, should be an invaluable opportunity for the medical student.

General Outline of Experience:
The students are expected to participate in the work-up of the new office patients that will eventually be admitted to the hospital for definitive therapy.  The remaining afternoons are spent working up specifically assigned cases for surgery the following day.  Whether the student spends his afternoons in the office or in the hospital, he is expected to make evening rounds with the attending urologist and the surgical resident assigned to urology.

Reading assignments are the same as outlined for interns and resident assigned to Urology.  Additionally, current articles related to specific clinical cases are distributed and are required reading.  These articles serve to broaden the student’s approach to the clinical problem and make him aware of the therapeutic alternatives.  This also impresses upon the student the necessity for continued study after his postgraduate or residency training.

Saturday mornings are spent with the attending urologist making rounds and attending various clinical conferences.  Saturday evening, Sunday morning and evening rounds are optional.

Research Project
Although basic research facilities are available to Providence Hospital, these facilities will only be made available to the senior student upon special request through the Director of Medical Education.

Clinical research projects are encouraged.  These projects are specific and limited in scope so that they can be successfully completed during the selective period.
