Early Detection of Hearing Loss

Do you have hearing loss?

The following questions can help you determine if you or someone you love needs a hearing evaluation by an audiologist.

  • Do you have a problem understanding conversation over the phone?
  • Do you have trouble following the conversation when two or more people are talking at the same time?
  • Do people complain that you have the TV volume turned up too high?
  • Do you have to strain to understand some conversations?
  • Do you have difficulty hearing when there is a lot of background noise?
  • Do you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves?
  • Do many people you talk to seem to mumble or not speak clearly enough?
  • Do you misunderstand what others are saying and respond inappropriately?
  • Do you have trouble understanding the speech of women and children?
  • Do people get annoyed because you misunderstand what they say?

If you answered yes to three or more of these questions, it is recommended that you see an audiologist for a hearing evaluation.

BabyEarly Detection in Babies

Six of every one thousand babies have some degree of hearing impairment that can affect speech, language and educational development. In fact, hearing impairment in children is 20 times more prevalent than many other birth defects which are routinely screened for at birth. Too often, hearing loss is not detected until children are ready for preschool. This means they miss out on critical language development making it more difficult for them, academically and socially.

The Holley Ear Institute believes in the detection of and initiation of treatment for hearing problems at the earliest possible moment. As an expansion of the infant hearing screening program originated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, MI., the Holley Ear Institute is working toward the goal of screening 100 percent of newborn infants born at St. John for hearing loss before they go home. This testing is made possible by our relationship with St. John Hospital and Medical Center and the strong foundation of Holley Ear Institute volunteers who do the testing.
