Hearing Loss Quiz for Babies

Does your baby: (Birth to three months)
  • React to loud sounds?
  • Turn his or her head to you when you speak?
  • Smile when spoken to?
  • Seem to know your voice (quiets if crying)?
Does your baby: (three to six months)
  • Look up or turn toward a new sound?
  • Respond to “no” and changes in tone?
  • Imitate his or her own voice?
  • Enjoy rattles, or other sound-making toys?
  • Begin to repeat sounds (ooh, aah, ba-ba)?
  • Become frightened by a loud voice?
Does your baby: (six to 10 months)
  • Respond to his/her name, phone, a voice?
  • Know common words (cup, shoe, bye-bye)?
  • Babble even when alone?
  • Start to respond to requests (“come here”)?
  • Look at things when you talk about them?

If you answered “no” to three or more of these questions, it is recommended that you take your baby for to see an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist) or an audiologist for a hearing evaluation.

 

The audiologists at St. John Hospital and Medical Center are equipped to provide a complete range of audiologic and vestibular testing and rehabilitative services, including hearing aid selection and dispensing.
