The Spine Center: Frequently Asked Questions

What will you charge me for this service?

Nothing. This is a complimentary service offered by St. John Hospital and Medical Center to assist you in getting the evaluation and treatment you need…in the most convenient way possible.

Will I need an appointment with the neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon?

If the surgeon recommends one or you prefer one, then yes. Some patients, however, will not need an appointment with a surgeon. In these cases, the surgeon will design a treatment plan so that you can begin your recovery immediately.

How long will it take for me to get better?

Recovery varies greatly from patient to patient. Several things contribute to your progress, including your general health, level of fitness, lifestyle, and your commitment to treatment. Once you’re feeling better, you will need to continue proper spine care for optimum health. Your back and spine surgeon can provide more specific information based on your individual situation.

Will my primary care physician be aware of my treatment?

Yes, our Spine Center team will keep your referring physician informed of your progress. Should the surgeon recommend medications, such as steroids or anti-inflammatories, he will send the suggestion to your referring physician for his/her consideration.

Will the spine surgeon address my employment status?

If you’ve not yet seen one of our spine surgeons, you will need to contact your primary care physician regarding your work situation. If you are seen by one of our surgeons, he will address your work status during your appointment.

How do you get my films or test results?

If you've had prior spine treatment at a St. John Providence Health System facility, please let us know. We will most likely be able to obtain the information for you. If you had testing at an independent facility, you will need to get those results and bring them to either Professional Building 2 of St. John Hospital and Medical Center, or the St. John Medical Center - Romeo Plank.

It's always wise to request a copy of your films or results when having testing done.
