St. John Hospital Lanscaping & Beautification

In July of 2007, St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) chose to improve the County-owned islands along Moross Rd., from Mack Avenue to Linville, to provide a calming and inviting landscape to arriving patients and visitors.

We also wanted to have a more manicured look to the area that draws attention to and complements the historical center of the hospital, and demonstrate our long-term commitment to the community and encourage adjoining property owners to do the same.

The project had two components.

  • First, the Moross Road islands were improved from Mack Avenue to Linville with the construction of planting beds along the length of the islands. We also installed irrigation to keep everything green and healthy throughout the season. This phase included the removal of a number of diseased Ash trees, and their replacement with new species more suitable for a roadway.
  • Second, we improved the front of the hospital where Chandler Park Drive ends, and in front of

Professional Building One, with updated landscaping and signage. The planting beds provide a more manicured look and draw attention to the historical center of the hospital.

The project includes approximately 20,000 plants, almost an acre of planting beds, and nearly a mile of irrigation.

SJH&MC Engineer Director Jim Wild worked with Wayne County and the City of Detroit to obtain needed permits and oversee the project. Landscape Architect Deb Axelrood, Harley Ellis Devereaux, planned the space, and teams from Backer Landscaping, led by owner, Joe Backer, provided the skilled laborers who transformed the space into a beautiful and calming area.

We hope that patients will feel that the beautification efforts provide a welcoming environment as they arrive for a procedure or to visit loved ones.
