What is a Trauma Center?
A Trauma Center specializes in the care of the injured in a systematic way, striving for a continuum of high-quality care. St. John Health System has made a commitment to address this serious public health issue and reduce preventable death and disability.

Surviving Trauma. Surviving a major injury and minimizing the chances of a complication or disability depends on an efficient system of highly specialized trauma care professionals. This system can include:
• Access to help (911 emergency dispatch)
• Ambulance and Pre-hospital Care
• Emergency Care
• Diagnostic & Imaging Technologies
• Surgery
• Critical Care
• Basic Hospital Care
• Rehabilitation

For some injuries, survival depends solely on prevention!

Trauma Facts
• Trauma is a physical injury or wound caused by a violent, external force, which may lead to death or permanent disability.
• Trauma is the leading cause of death in people from ages 1 to 44, and is the third leading cause of death overall.
• Trauma afflicts all ages and social classes.
•  Trauma is not an accident! An accident is defined as an unexpected event, happening by chance. Trauma is a definable, correctable event, with specific risks for occurrence.
• Trauma affects more than 59 million Americans each year and results in more than 145,000 deaths. Trauma is our most expensive health problem, costing Americans nearly $500 billion annually.

Top Notch Emergency Facilities and Equipment

  • Four trauma bays in the Emergency Center and 20 operating rooms available 24 hours a day that are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
  • A 24-hour Radiology Department  with dedicated 64-slice CT (Computed tomography) Scanner, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner, ultrasound, and angiography suites staffed with Radiologists.
  • An on-site, full-service Blood Bank that provides for a comprehensive supply of blood products to the Trauma Team as required.
  • A 20-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) that is directly accessible from the Operating Room.
  • Pediatric emergency medicine physicians who treat patients in a dedicated pediatric module designed for privacy and comfort.

Skilled Staff

The trauma patient is seen each day by the trauma surgeon, Trauma Service Residents and a trauma case manager. The trauma surgeon oversees the care that is provided by consulting physicians, nurses, therapists, and allied health specialists. This system provides quality care and a smooth transition for the patient, from critical care until the early phases of rehabilitation.  Once able, arrangements are made through our Physical Therapy and Rehabilitative Services Department for referrals to Rehabilitative Institutes

Trauma Registry

Our Trauma Center is committed to providing the highest quality of care available. It includes a performance improvement program for all phases and disciplines of care. As part of this, we have a Trauma Registry which includes details regarding the patient’s injuries, care, and outcomes that is used to monitor and improve our care. The Trauma Registry's data helps guide injury prevention initiatives. We collaborate with local and regional organizations on prevention programs for groups at risk for certain injuries.

As a Level Two Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, St. John Hospital and Medical Center's Emergency Services must meet standards established by the American College of Surgeons. St. John Hospital and Medical Center strives to exceed these standards by providing the highest standard of emergency trauma care available for all of our patients and families.

Why You Can Trust Us

As a Trauma Center, St. John Hospital and Medical Center has the resources to take care of a patient’s complex and critical injuries. Our hospital has a full complement of specialists, highly skilled providers, and state of the art technology. St. John Hospital and Medical Center also serves as a resource to assist other hospitals with consultation and education.
