Second Chance HeartlineSecond Chance Heartline is an organization whose members have had cardiovascular surgery and other types of cardiac treatment. HistoryIn 1972, St. John Hospital’s Dr. Philip Feringa noticed the positive psychological effect of recovered coronary bypass surgery patients visit with a post-operative patient. Because of this, Dr. Feringa wrote to all his former patients to see if they would be interested in forming a heart patient-related organization, geared toward helping cardiovascular surgery patients both pre – and post-operatively. The response was overwhelming and in October 1973, Second Chance Heartline became reality. Officers were elected and a visitation committee was formed. What We DoWe visit cardiovascular surgery patients to offer support and answer non-medical questions. We also meet bi-monthly in the auditorium at St. John Hospital & Medical Center. Guest speakers provide our members with information about heart disease, medical and surgical treatment, counseling and insight on various health-related subjects. This volunteer group is of Cardiology Cardiovascular Services of St. John Hospital & Medical Center. They are supported by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. The annual summer picnic and annual fall dinner awards banquet are a few of our major events.
