Challenging themselves physically and mentally has always appealed to the adventurous side of a group of individuals whoare making a real difference in the fight against breast cancer. The Champions for Life Climb to Beat Breast Cancer ~ Rocky Mountain Challenge team reached the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs on June 27 to raise awareness and funds to battle cancer.
The team included: Francesco Lucarelli, Lorraine Owczarek, Alice Kopecky, Amy Owczarek, Patrick McMahon, Danielle Nappi, Paul Nappi , John Castro, Jessica Isbrecht, and David Roberts.
The Climb to Beat Breast Cancer ~ Rocky Mountain Challenge was the Champions for Life first attempt at forming a team of climbers to support the Van Elslander Cancer Center’s (VECC) Liggett Breast Center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. In the past, Lucarelli, who lost his own mother to cancer, participated in climbs himself to raise funds. By joining this expedition, the climbers’ goal was to become part of a team that brings attention to and raises funds for the VECC.
One in every nine women has a chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer within her lifetime. This statistic is startling. The VECC’s Liggett Breast Centerfocuses on early detection, screening, risk factor assessment and, perhaps most important, timely treatment. When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, every day counts. The Liggett Breast Center’s revolutionary process enables you to review your options quickly with your entire cancer care team. The nationally recognized team of experts can then help you begin treatment within just days of your diagnosis.
As Goodwill Ambassadors for the VECC, the Champions for Life group is dedicated to increasing awareness and visibility through special fundraising events and each member’s daily activities. Through these efforts, the ultimate goal of elevating the quality of care at the cancer center will be achieved.
