“Care that leaves no one behind”

The Physicians Who Care project expands the services offered through the Voices of Detroit Initiative, a program that assists the uninsured and underinsured in managing their health care.  There are 41 million uninsured people in the United States; 1.3 million reside in Michigan and 250,000 in the city of Detroit. These numbers continue to rise. Eight out of 10 of the uninsured are from working families, between jobs, work at or own small businesses, or their job does not provide health insurance. These people live sicker, die younger, and frequently utilize the emergency room as their primary site for health care.

The Physicians Who Care Project allows specialty physicians to volunteer and provide services for the uninsured working poor. With the addition of specialty care, we can ensure a continuum of care for the uninsured and underinsured people whom our health system has committed to serve. This project allows St. John Health to put a dollar amount on how much uncompensated care each physician is providing and acknowledge and recognize the physicians for their generosity.
