Gynecologic Surgery - Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)

Laparscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) is a minimally invasive surgery performed on a female to remove the uterus and possibly the fallopian tubes and ovaries. A hysterectomy is traditionally performed through a larger incision on the abdomen or the vagina. A LAVH procedure allows for another approach to standard hysterectomy. The decision to have a LAVH requires you and your doctor to discuss your personal options. The Gyn physician begins the procedure by inspecting the reproductive organs and performing much of the hysterectomy by laparoscopy. The physician will utilize the CO2 gas to balloon the abdomen so that all of the reproductive organs can be seen. Your Gyn physician will use a small scope and camera along with special instruments to perform a hysterectomy with assistance of laparoscopy. He or she will then remove the uterus through the vagina to complete the hysterectomy.
